5 Ingredient Date Energy Balls on a plate.

Made from wholesome ingredients, these date energy balls are naturally sweetened by dates, which give them a pleasant chewiness and concentrated flavor. Dates are a convenient natural sweetener and provide quick carbohydrates for energy, along with fibre and minerals that help you feel satisfied between meals.

This recipe is very flexible — you can easily adapt it to suit what you have on hand or to fit dietary needs. Swap nuts, try different nut butters, add seeds or protein powder, or coat the balls in coconut or chopped nuts for added texture and flavor.

How to Make Them

With just five ingredients and about 15 minutes of hands-on time, these date energy balls come together quickly in a food processor. Below is an easy overview of the ingredients and steps; the full recipe is provided in the recipe card further down.

Ingredients Overview

  • Dates: When using fresh, soft Medjool dates you usually don’t need to soak them. If your dates are dry, soak them in very hot water for about 15 minutes to soften.
  • Nuts: Finely ground almonds are used here, but you can substitute walnuts, cashews, pecans, or hazelnuts. Grind them finely before adding so the mixture binds smoothly.
  • Unsweetened shredded coconut: This adds texture and a light coconut flavor. You can use sweetened coconut if you prefer, but that adds refined sugar.
  • Natural peanut butter: Any natural nut butter works — almond butter or cashew butter are great alternatives.
  • Cocoa powder: Unsweetened cocoa provides a chocolatey note. If you want more protein, you can replace cocoa with a chocolate protein powder.

Steps Overview

  1. Soften dry dates by soaking them in very hot water for about 15 minutes, then drain and reserve the soaking water.
  2. Process the dates in a food processor, adding a tablespoon of the reserved water at a time until you have a smooth paste.
  3. Add the ground nuts, nut butter, shredded coconut and cocoa. Pulse until the mixture comes together into a cohesive dough.
  4. If the mixture is too soft to roll, add a tablespoon of ground nuts or extra coconut at a time until it firms up enough to shape.
  5. Scoop about two teaspoons of mixture and roll between your palms into smooth balls. Optionally, roll finished balls in extra shredded coconut or finely chopped nuts.

Storage Instructions

Store the energy balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. For longer storage, freeze them in a sealed container or freezer bag for up to three months. Thaw a few minutes at room temperature before serving — they soften quickly and are ready to enjoy.

Tip: Freeze a small batch in a single layer on a tray first, then transfer to a bag so they don’t stick together.

Course: Dessert / Snack
Cuisine: American
Servings: 14
Calories: 84 kcal per ball

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dry dates, pitted
  • cup finely ground almonds (or other nut)
  • ¼ cup unsweetened dried coconut (plus more for rolling)
  • ¼ cup natural peanut butter, well blended and chilled (or almond butter)
  • 1 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Soak the dates in 1 cup of very hot water for approximately 15 minutes if they are dry. If your dates are soft, you can skip this step. Drain the dates, reserving the soaking water.
  2. Place the dates in the bowl of a food processor and add 1 tablespoon of the reserved soaking water. Process until a smooth paste forms. If the mixture is still lumpy, add another tablespoon and process again. You may need up to 2 tablespoons total to reach a smooth consistency.
  3. Add the ground almonds, peanut butter, shredded coconut, and cocoa powder. Pulse until the mixture comes together — it should form a sticky, malleable dough.
  4. Test the texture by rolling a small amount between your palms. If it is too soft to roll, add extra ground almonds or coconut one tablespoon at a time until it holds its shape easily.
  5. Scoop about two teaspoons of mixture (or use a small scoop) and roll into smooth balls. Continue until all the mixture is used — you should get about 14 balls. Roll some in extra shredded coconut or finely chopped nuts, if desired.

Notes

  1. Coating options: dried coconut, finely chopped peanuts, pistachios, or cocoa powder all work well.
  2. Storage: refrigerate up to one week or freeze for up to three months. Thaw a few minutes at room temperature before serving.
