About This Gluten-Free Guide to NYC
This guide focuses on gluten-free spots in Manhattan that I personally recommend and visit regularly. It includes fully dedicated gluten-free bakeries and restaurants as well as trusted non-dedicated places that have strong protocols for preventing cross-contact.
New York City offers a wide range of gluten-free choices that can make dining out feel safe and exciting again. While I’m a New Yorker at heart, I’ve curated this list based on repeated visits and firsthand experience with celiac-safe dining.

Note: This is not a complete directory of every gluten-free spot in the city. Instead, it highlights favorites I return to and trust. I update it frequently as new places open and existing ones evolve—check back for updates when planning your trip.

I also have a YouTube video that highlights several fully gluten-free spots in Manhattan—search for my channel if you want a visual tour.
This guide exclusively covers Manhattan; other boroughs are not included here.
Disclaimer: Everyone’s experience with celiac disease is different. Dedicated gluten-free facilities tend to be the safest choice. For non-dedicated restaurants, I only recommend places I’ve visited or where clear procedures exist for celiac diners. Use your judgment and choose places where you feel safe.

A Little Back Story About My Love For NYC…
I’m a native New Yorker with deep ties to the city. After college I worked in the city and, despite moving away, I never stopped visiting. New York holds memories of home and family—and now, as someone with celiac disease, it feels even more welcoming thanks to its robust gluten-free scene.

Years ago the gluten-free options were limited. Today, Manhattan is a haven for celiac-safe dining—offering everything from bagels and pastries to full-service Italian meals that are completely gluten-free.
How To Find Gluten-Free Food in New York City

While this guide highlights trusted Manhattan spots, New York is large and there are many more options. Downtown, the West Village and areas around Washington Square Park have a high concentration of gluten-free businesses, but you’ll find choices across Midtown and the Upper East and West Sides as well.
If you plan to explore beyond this list, specialty apps and directories can help you find up-to-date reviews, hours, and filters for celiac-friendly places. Consider researching ahead to confirm hours and availability so you don’t arrive to find a favorite closed.
Dining Out In New York City With Celiac Disease

Many NYC spots are celiac-aware, but not all are fully dedicated gluten-free facilities. When dining out, be clear and specific about your needs. I recommend saying you have a “severe gluten allergy” and clarifying that you have celiac disease, then explain how food must be prepared to avoid cross-contact.
Ask about dedicated prep areas, separate fryers, and gluten-free labeling. If a restaurant provides clear protocols and you feel comfortable, it can be safe. If in doubt, choose a fully dedicated gluten-free bakery or restaurant.

Beyond bagels, they sell sandwiches, salads, a range of cream cheeses (including plantbased options), and baked goods. They also ship nationwide, so you can enjoy their bagels at home if you can’t visit in person.

Posh Pop Bakeshop

Posh Pop in Greenwich Village is a decadent, 100% gluten-free bakery known for rich cakes, cookies, and brownies. Their desserts are imaginative and indulgent—expect decision fatigue in the best possible way. Posh Pop also ships nationwide.

Restaurants With Gluten-Free Options in New York City
Keste Pizza

Keste is not fully gluten-free but is known for excellent celiac protocols and authentic Neapolitan-style pizza. They use dedicated prep areas, a separate oven and fryer, and a specific gluten-free flour blend. Note that some gluten-free pizza doughs use wheat starch that has had the gluten protein removed—this is generally safe for celiacs but not for those with a wheat allergy, so ask the staff if you have concerns.

Friedman’s is a multi-location chain with strong allergen protocols and dedicated fryers. They serve sandwiches, salads, and comfort items like fried chicken and waffles prepared with gluten-free batter.
