Convenient Protein Sources I Rely On

I can’t stress how important protein is, and unfortunately it’s the macronutrient many of us struggle to get enough of.

Here are some of my go-to foods for high protein and high convenience!

Cottage Cheese

Cottage cheese is an easy, versatile dairy option for people who tolerate dairy well. It works beautifully as a base for savory dips, mixed into salads, or whipped with fruit for a quick, protein-rich dessert. It’s mild in flavor, mixes well with herbs, spices, or sweeteners, and 100 g typically provides about 10 g of protein. Pair it with fruit, nuts, or whole-grain crackers to make a balanced snack or light meal.

Tofu

Tofu is a reliable plant-based source of complete protein and adapts to many cooking styles. Use it in stir-fries, soups, curries, or crumble it into a scramble as an egg alternative. It soaks up marinades and sauces, making it a convenient choice for meal prep. Expect roughly 8 g of protein per 100 g of firm tofu, and consider pressing and marinating it for better texture and flavor.

Protein Powder

Protein powder is a convenient way to boost protein in smoothies, oatmeal, or baked goods when whole-food options aren’t available. A well-composed smoothie with fruit, greens, a source of fat, and protein powder can serve as a quick, balanced meal replacement. My preferred powders deliver around 20 g of protein per serving; check the label for exact amounts and choose one that fits your dietary needs and taste preferences.

Collagen

Unflavored collagen powder dissolves easily into hot or cold beverages and can be added to soups, coffees, or baked recipes without altering taste or texture much. Many collagen products provide about 10 g of protein per scoop. Collagen is particularly useful for adding protein to meals and drinks without changing flavor profiles.

Eggs

Eggs are a nutrient-dense, affordable protein source that also supply fat-soluble vitamins and other nutrients. One large egg provides about 6 g of protein. A common quick meal is two whole eggs plus an extra egg white for additional protein while keeping fat moderate; that combination yields roughly 15–16 g of protein. Eggs are great boiled, scrambled, poached, or included in salads and sandwiches.

Bone Broth

Bone broth is a simple way to add protein to soups, stews, or to sip as a warm, savory snack. A cup of bone broth can offer around 10 g of protein depending on concentration and preparation. Use it as a flavorful cooking liquid or a light, comforting drink between meals.

Meat Sticks and Biltong

Dry-cured meats like meat sticks or biltong are portable, shelf-stable protein snacks ideal for travel or busy days. Many turkey or beef sticks provide between 7–10 g of protein per stick or individual packet, depending on size and brand. They’re convenient for topping a salad, pairing with cheese, or enjoying by themselves for a quick protein boost.

Chicken Chips

Chicken chips (dehydrated or baked chicken crisps) are a newer option for a savory, high-protein snack. Some products deliver around 12 g of protein per serving. They pair well with dips such as cottage cheese, hummus, or yogurt-based spreads for a satisfying snack that combines protein with a bit of texture.

Tuna

Tuna is a classic, versatile choice for quick lunches. Canned tuna can be mixed into salads, wraps, or formed into patties. Roughly 100 g of canned tuna contains around 18 g of protein, making it an efficient way to meet daily targets. When choosing canned fish, consider sustainability and sodium content, and rotate protein sources for variety.

Practical tips: aim to include a protein source at each meal to support satiety and muscle maintenance, combine protein with vegetables, healthy fats, and whole grains for balance, and keep a few shelf-stable options on hand for busy days. Rotate choices to cover a variety of amino acids and nutrients, and tailor portions to your individual energy and health needs. Small changes—like adding a scoop of protein to your smoothie or choosing a cottage cheese snack—add up over the week and make hitting your protein goals much easier.
