Once upon a time I had three little ones aged five and under. Those years were full of play dates, preschool parties, and simple treats that made celebrations special. This rainbow fruit platter quickly became a staple for St. Patrick’s Day preschool celebrations and family gatherings because it’s bright, healthy, and easy to assemble.

St. Patrick’s Day Rainbow Fruit Platter

Aaron and I made this platter several years in a row and it was always a hit. Now, years later, our youngest still loves helping arrange fruit rows. We had fun recreating the rainbow together, and he even kept a small drawing of a rainbow close by to make sure we included all the colors.

Little details make this platter even more appealing: cute animal fruit picks are perfect for kids to grab smaller pieces of fruit, and they also work well tucked into lunchboxes for a fun finger-food option. Picks with slightly longer stems can be handy for dipping into whipped topping or fruit dip because they give a better grip on fruit pieces.

You can serve this platter with a simple whipped topping, a yogurt fruit dip, or place small ramekins of candy or marshmallows at the ends for extra fun. The combination of fresh fruit and a creamy dip is always popular with kids and adults alike.

Best Fruits to Use for a Fruit Platter

  • Red: strawberries, raspberries, cherries
  • Orange: mandarins, sliced oranges, peaches, mango
  • Yellow: pineapple
  • Green: green grapes, kiwi
  • Blue: blueberries, blackberries
  • Purple: grapes, blackberries
Avoid fruits that brown quickly, like sliced apples, pears, and bananas when possible. If you want bananas, use larger halves or add them just before serving to minimize browning.

Ingredients

  • Strawberries, sliced
  • Mandarin oranges, peeled and sectioned
  • Pineapple, sliced
  • Green grapes
  • Blueberries
  • Blackberries
  • 2 cups whipped topping (or a yogurt fruit dip of your choice)

Instructions

  1. Wash and prepare all fruit. Slice strawberries and pineapple as needed, peel and section mandarins, and remove stems from grapes if desired.
  2. Arrange the fruit on a large cutting board, tray, or platter in rows to form a rainbow shape. Start with red on the outside and work inward through orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.
  3. Place two small bowls or ramekins at one end of the rainbow and fill with whipped topping or your favorite fruit dip for easy dipping.
  4. Add small finishing touches such as fruit picks, a few marshmallows, or graham crackers alongside the dip for variety. Serve immediately or chill briefly before serving.

Presentation and Serving Tips

Use a large rectangular cutting board or platter for the best rainbow effect. Keep fruit similarly sized within each color row for a polished look. If you need to prepare the fruit ahead of time, store cut fruit in airtight containers and assemble the platter shortly before serving to keep everything fresh and vibrant.

Consider offering two dip options—one lighter (like a yogurt dip) and one indulgent (like whipped topping)—so guests can choose. For parties with young children, include fun picks or small tools so they can serve themselves safely.
